Heart Ornament Tutorial
Follow the step below to create a heart ornament keepsake.
-
1
You will need the following materials:
- Fabric: avoid stretchy, sheer, and slippery kinds. Tasteful designs in soft colors of pink, blue, green, white, and gold/yellow preferred.
- Embroidery floss in a coordinating color
- Ribbon in a coordinating color (1/8" or 1/4", about 3-5 inches)
- Needle
- Scissors
- Heart template: make your own by cutting a heart shape out of cardstock. Exact size does not matter.
- Stuffing: polyester fiberfill, pellets, beads, pillow stuffing, and wool are all fine. Avoid anything that could get clumpy (like cotton balls), or anything that would be damaged if wet (like rice).
-
2
Start with the heart template and two layers of fabric with wrong sides facing in towards each other.
-
3
Cut out the heart shape so that you are left with 2 pieces of fabric that back up to each other.
-
4
Fasten a ribbon to the wrong side of one of the hearts so that the ends will be hidden in the middle of the finished project.
-
5
Feed the thread back through the ribbon so that the border stitch pattern starts just above the middle top of the heart.
-
6
Sew the back panel to the front panel using a border stitch.
- This example shows a blanket stitch border, which works well for this project.
- Tutorials on this stitch or other patterns can be easily found online.
-
7
When most of the border is complete, pause to add stuffing.
-
8
You can use a pencil to poke the filling into every part of the heart. Use plenty so that the heart looks nice and plump.
-
9
When the border is complete, feed the needle through the middle of the heart in any direction.
-
10
Trim the excess string off and knead the stuffing until it has an even thickness throughout.
